Dear California,

I am leaving for Buenos Aires in several days, and I don’t know when I will be back. I will miss you.

I will miss your hills, that reveal hidden vistas making an afternoon drive a source of delight. I will miss your open spaces just outside any city filled with orange, avocado, and almond trees, cows, and the fresh food they provide.

What am I going to do without the Mexican food? Fish tacos, plates piled high with seafood, freshly refried beans, and margaritas that are the perfect accompaniment to an ocean sunset.

I will miss your crazy people: The guy in San Francisco that dresses like a bush and scares people, the guy on roller skates in Santa Monica with a turban and a guitar that sings about chocolate cake.

I will miss people discussing screenplays, new businesses, and art, even if most of them will never be more than dreams. I will miss your acceptance of whoever I want to be: whether I stumble into the bakery with slippers still on my feet, or don’t want to shave my legs, or dye my hair purple, you will accept me with open arms, perhaps even turning my eccentricity into a new trend.

But most of all, I will miss my family- my mother, my brother, and his wife and children. Please watch over them and keep them safe from wildfires and earthquakes. And delight them with all you have to offer until I can come back.
